What are your thoughts on games writers supporting or being supported by game devs they write about via patreon?

In light of the released Emails from Gamejournopros regarding both your case at Destructoid, and others, what do you feel about such an industry wide mailing list existing? should it be disbanded and not used? how could it even be trusted that such a thing wouldn't happen again behind closed doors?
