Not OP, but I bootstrapped a consulting business from zero to about $2MM in annual revenue in five years.

This is by far the most difficult thing I've ever done, but that also makes it the most rewarding. However, I don't do this because I want to do it. I feel absolutely compelled to do it. The word "passion" is from the Latin passio, which means to suffer. It's quite hard to explain this over the Internet without sounding melodramatic, but it really does feel like that.

I think all successful entrepreneurs feel the same way. It's too hard of a path otherwise. Dreams of being rich, having lots of free time or influence are too abstract, too remote, to keep you motivated. There has to be an internal fire, a passion, that fuels the persistence and grit. There are many, many failed entrepreneurs in the world because they didn't have this and were extrinsically motivated.
