Submariner here. I think it is so much better because of the size of the crew. My boat was a fast attack so we had around 150 in the crew. Cooking for 150 means the meal will be better than if they were cooking for 500 or more. Which is what other military cooks have to do.

Plus when we are underway, a third or more of the crew will be asleep at any given time. So underway, the cooks make meals for even fewer people at a time. There is a meal at the end of every watch, so every six hours. The off going watch section and the on coming watch section both eat. So every meal is for about 100 people.

Never saw a Russian sub but the Russians came into Pearl Harbor for training exercises several years ago. Their surface ship was a floating rust bucket and their sailors were too poor to leave base.

The Chinese on the other hand, had immaculate ships and their sailors bought up a ton of liquor and electronics from the base stores.
