PSA: If you haven't read what happened to OP's hand, read this:

DON'T WEAR GLOVES WHEN WORKING WITH ANY MACHINE THAT CAN PULL YOUR HAND IN.

Okay, this is just from my personal experience, not a cop or anything; but here's a list of things to do when you get pulled over:

  • Remove your keys from the ignition, and place them somewhere conspicuous - this signals that you are not intending to flee/ or that you have any reason to do so.

  • Activate your car's interior lights if it dark out at all (i.e. not middle of the day)

  • Place your hands on the steering wheel with your palms visible.

  • Do not argue or be confrontational in any way - if you have received this ticket in error, fight it in court, not on the side of the highway.

  • When the officer/deputy/patrolman is approaching, keep your movements to a minimum, don't make it look like you are hiding evidence or retrieving a weapon.

  • Make occasional eye contact.

  • When prompted for documents, tell the LEO where they are before you reach to get them, and do so slowly.
