There is some truth to this but more importantly its financially unsustainable to keep a large QA team permanently staffed for 90% of studios since at various stages in the dev cycle a large QA team would have nothing to do. The work load is very much feast or famine.
At the end of the day QA is unskilled labor that everyone thinks they want to do with no shortage of applicants. 18 year olds are perfectly able to do the job out of high school assuming they have a decent work ethic and can write coherent sentences. I can't help but roll my eyes a little bit when I see terms like "scummy" thrown around. It would be the same with any other industry. Don't like it and still want to be in games? Learn an actual dev side skill like art or engineering.
