I've been in the military 8 years.

Now, as a Staff Sergeant, I know that it's bullshit.

It's a kneejerk reaction and the only reason it's done is because the so called leaders don't want to spend time fixing the actual issue, so they punish everyone, and hope the issue gets fixed.

It's only effective on an extremely short term basis.

If you go down slowly enough you will be fine. The air will compress and even out the pressure. However the compressed air is basically poison. It's hard to find a good mixture at depth.

Now if were to suddenly find yourself that deep, in like a submarine implosion, assuming you live through the sub squeezing all around you that instant pressure difference will kill you. In a not pretty way.
