We get 3 phases in our buildings/houses here in austria.

Rarely used is not really correct in our case. We use all of them so we won't draw unnesessary high currets over one source/breaker. (big freezer/ cookingplates/ washing maschine/ dryer /ect.)

Thank you, now it makes more sense.

As it seems its 1 HV phase with a stepdown trafo to get 2 phases for your house.

the us seem to set the transformator on a different 'point' in the setup then europe, that threw me of.

is it common for electric companys to only 'give' away one phase?

Iam certain they have 3 phases, only one would't make sense.
