I had that happen, wbut it was my step-father that did the beating with a 2x4. At age 14, I made the decision to move in with my father. Once there, I ran into 'adjustment' issues, so my dad and step mother decided maybe I should stay in a facility for a couple weeks. Of course through testing and questioning I had told them some of the things that had happened while living with my mom, so they sent some state cops to question her, and of course she denied it. Now instead of adjustment issues, everyone was looking at me like I just made this shit up. I'm now 37 years old with a family of my own and talk to my parents once or twice a year.
Edit: some people are asking why a mom would do it, she wasn't scared. Of my mom, my sister and I, I was the only one he got physical with. With my mother, it was the financial security. I'm pretty sure she could be classified as a gold-digger, but all his worth came from a hourly worker at a steel mill, so no gold to be found there, which means she sold out for cheap. She was registered nurse who could've equaled or exceeded his income, but she just didn't want to work.

When are you getting your head tattooed? My wife also has alopecia(since age 6, now 23) and decided to get hers done since it's super easy to cover with a wig if she needs. Here we are, bumping heads at our wedding
