You can say "fuck" here.
It's cool.

My dad had his neck hyper extended by anesthesiologist during an operation and shattered two of his vertebra. The bike shards were pinching his spinal column. They removed the shards a couple hours later, but he was completely paralyzed for 5 months then slowly got movement back over the next year. He never regain his fine motor skills though.

Even though he eventually got back to 95%, my mom tested him like he was made of glass. Drove him nuts.

Is your family ever worried about you getting hurt more so now than they did before?

My dad was 58 at the time and going in for surgery to remove some cancer. Other than the cancer, he was in good health.

You know that crooked metal thing you see on TV that they use to open your airway in order to put the tube down your throat? I think it's called intabating. Well, they had my dad knocked out with the gas then needed to intabate him to run the tube. The anesthesiologist was having some problems and lifted up a little too much and.... OK. Now it fits!

When my dad came out of surgery and began waking up, the Dr asked him how he was feeling.

Dad - "I dunno. I can't seem to feel anything.".
Doc - Poking him with a pen on the feet, legs, stomach, chest, etc "You can feel this, can't you?".
Dad - " Nope. I guess my body is still asleep.".

They rushed him for another quick xray and saw the bone shards getting ready to cut his spinal cord. The Dr came out to the waiting room where my family was and told us to call the preacher because it doesn't look like the old man will see the sunrise. He handed us the xray and said we could go in to see him.

He was laying in the bed and in pretty good spirits. My mom was wailing. My dad asked me what her problem was.

Me - "You don't know? They didn't tell you?".
Dad - "Tell me what? And when is this crap going to wear off. I can't move.".

Holding the xray, I went to that light box thing they use. I popped the xray in and turned it on. I had to tell my dad that he was probably going to die.

They did an emergency operation within the hour (new anesthesiologist) and removed all the bone shards. I guess there was enough damage that he was still paralyzed from neck down for 4 months but not enough to keep the old guy down.

They talked to a lawyer and said they just wanted lost wages (my dad was the only income). The hospital flat out said that my dad was like that when he came in. They got nothing. The hospital denied anything ever happened. I talked to my family practitioner and told him about it. He said they over extended his neck and it's something they are trained not to do.

He recovered enough to eventually go back to work, but the cancer eventually caught up to him about 3 years ago.

Sorry for any typos. On my phone.

My parents wanted lost wages for the 14 months off (about $120,000). The lawyers didn't want to touch it because they would only get (if I remember right) about 30% of the winnings. Going up against a hospital's team of lawyers for only $40k? They couldn't get any lawyers to take the case.

The entire thing was crap.
