Yup that's a fine suggestion, one I can relate to. Years ago, I made a Java music player similar to Winamp. I tried cramming in as many features of the original as I could, and it turned into a very satisfying learning experience.
One silly customization I did was adding a message box that said 'Fuck you, I don't do that!' when dragging and dropping a non-music file into the program... Not the most mature thing to do, in retrospect. :D
