This is very very widely wanted, I'm extremely excited to see this feature in the game. I'd say it's my only barrier to calling Space Engineers my favorite game of all time.

If you're searching for inspiration, look at Garry's Mod's WireMod - it is a set of math/logic gates that can be interfaced to produce very complex designs (Radar, space ships, homing missiles, wild-weasels, etc)

It also included Expression gates, which were text-programmable gates.

You guys are awesome. Keep releasing frequent updates and making this game the game we've all been hoping for since we were kids!
