I believe that the recievers insurance covers it. Cause its not you recieving the care.

At least when I signed up to for the registry about 6 years ago the still harvested both ways. I think they do have to take it direct from your marrow in some cases but thats fairly rare now.

That being said it's important that you are ok with donating either way. You shouldn't sign up with the mindset that I won't have to donate the surgical way. You don't get a choice how to donate, it is dependent on what is needed by the recipient. The worst thing you can do is sign up to donate without being full committed to it.

I can't speak to the difference in the availability of plans.

But if you have health insurance through your employer you are not eligible for subsidies through the marketplace unless your employer insurance is deemed "not affordable or doesn't meet minimum value" (costs over 9.5% of household income and doesn't cover 60% of medical costs). So even if you were under the 400% FPL if your insurance through your employer meets these two requirements than you are not eligible for a government subsidy.
