Yeah. If me and my friends wanted alcohol someone would have to go into Safeway and put a handle in their purse. It was always a heist and was obviously risky. If we wanted weed I would just talk to my guy in civics class.

If you advocate for animal rights, I assume that implies you support the idea that animals have a right to life free from being slaughtered for food

and how, by any measure, is it better now? Iraq is a failed state, Afghanistan is still overrun by the Taliban, and Syria is engaged in one of the longest running civil conflicts since Ww2. On top of that, hundreds of thousands are dead and millions more are fleeing to western countries. I see nothing but signs that military intervention has created an increasingly volatile situation and exacerbating the region's problems. am I wrong?

I think it stops at basic rights like humane treatment and right to life. The line isn't as ambiguous as you are making it out to be. As far as I know animals do not yet have legal rights to own property.
