How in your district was domestic violence against men handled?

Before I begun a transition to become a woman, i was the male in a straight relationship that was abusive for 4 years with physical violence. I had nowhere to go and did not feel the police would believe it. For the last 2 years, I started to defend myself, meaning we both had bruises. This meant to me, I couldn't go to anyone - Who'd believe that I didn't start or deserve it?

I'd just like to know what'd likely have happened if I did go to the police back then.
