Based on my experience, I'd totally agree. If you don't have connections you need people who are willing to put in a good word for you. Why will they do that? Because you deliver quality work and are willing to go the extra mile if a project requires it. And let's face it, also because you're a nice human and they get along fine with you.

Those would be handled by a cargo airline while OP is with a passenger one. Usually such exotic animals have a groom with them, meaning a person who is with them all the time and also flies jumpseat where they have the possiblity to check on the animal. If there is a stop between Malaysia and the US you would also have the possiblity to add/change water if required.

The transport of animals is quite regulated by IATA and of course all the different veterinary regulations in different countries. Having said that, it's still very stressful for the animal and some take it worse than others.
