I’m a dasher. This is absolutely someone scamming you.

That being said, you SHOULD give a bit of a cash tip on a large order like that. I have delivered $200+ and generally get tipped $5-7 for those orders even though that kind of order takes a HUGE amount of my dash time.

Since the article came out I’ve started getting way more cash tips though, which I appreciate!

The orders take longer so there is more hanging out at restaurants and when it’s a big delivery like that, it’s more like catering. I’m carrying several large foil casserole dishes and lots of bags. This means more trips. Also with an order at this scale I am expected to bring it into the home, not just to the doorstep (or at least the customer expects me to. DoorDash has not told me to).

Now these orders come along to me because I paid DoorDash extra for a big space blanket that signals to them I can take on catering orders. So it’s a bummer to put in the extra service and time but I get more money getting an order from McDonalds.

Now this isn’t always the case. I have gotten tipped VERY WELL for some of the orders, well enough for me to always make the gamble. But it’d be nice to get tipped even 10% of the order cost if it were guaranteed.
