Really? I'd think people would be drawn to the exotic. I am, anyways.

My therapist describes me as "unique."

Hi there! I'm hearing, and I learned ASL from my best friend, who is Deaf. Over the years, I've studied more and learned more, and now she takes me places to interpret for her. I've also gotten more deaf friends, and even been able to talk using video phone and such. My receptive language skills are not great still (I just don't have a lot of practice reading sign) but I guess my sign is good enough that my friend keeps me around. 😊

So, here's my question (or questions). I want to try for national certification to become an interpreter for a career. But I heard the certification process is ridiculously tough. Is there hope for me?

Also, I am not Deaf and do not have any deaf family, but I feel a connection with the Deaf community because I've been involved in it for many years and gotten many Deaf friends. I hear (ha.) that sometimes Deaf are resentful of interpreters who come to the process by self-referral, as it were. Would you, personally, feel comfortable with someone like me?

Thanks for your time!
