My mother had lung and heart issues and was told she needed to stop smoking or it would severely limit her life expectancy. She was not able to do it and lasted another 8 years after her first heart attack.

At some point I forgave her for her problems and told her I loved her even though she wouldn't take care of herself. I am really happy I made that choice. People are flawed, you won't be happier if you destroy your relationship with your dad. I know you it will be hard for you to see him declining, but I'd recommend you try to be strong and show him love while you can.

Hey man, it takes a lifetime of damage to get that kind of kidney issue... this isn't your fault, it's the bad dice roll of nature.

I don't have a terminal illness, but I have some chronic conditions, including ones that cause me pretty severe pain at least a few days out of every month... It is really hard to not be healthy, and it can be really isolating. No one will really understand what that means, the mental toll it takes.
