Makes sense if they're trying to bust CP uploaders. But I know nothing about that technique.

When I guided in the boundary waters this was the bathing protocol when you got back on site. A long sauna with dr. bronners and a jump off the dock into Farm Lake, which at night was pretty chilly.

This works in other circumstances as well, but it does require you to have money stashed or family with a bank account and hopefully someone bought your debt on the cheap.

My SO had 5ish grand of student loans, Lehman Bros went belly up, and I'm assuming a company bought her debt for $2k or so and came knocking.

I had her talk her way up the food chain to a manager with clout and we offered them $3500 to clear it. They agreed and I had them send the paperwork. I liquidated a good chunk of my emergency fund, but we had that refilled pretty soon, and without interest beyond what was lost by it not being in savings.

At the end of the day, we likely saved 2-3k in principle, interest and headache.
