As a once Audio Tech who sold out to corporate, tell him to look for local community theaters and small venues and volunteer. He may be busy for awhile while working another job that actually pays, but he'll get loads of experience. Once he's been tech'n for awhile, and he's a hard worker he should mention to the owners, executive directors, etc that his job is going to require him to work more. If they're smart (and if he's worth it), they'll offer a paying gig. Worked for me.
