In America you do get a longer prison sentence if you have a gun in accessory to the crime. Depending on what it is, it can be 10 years or more in prison just for having a gun in your person.

Also criminals not caring about the law and will get guns is exactly why you need guns for home defense. Guns are heavily regulated in South Africa yet criminals use these guns all the time for crime which leads to home defense firearms going up.
