In David Quammen's book, Spillover, he mentions 'The Hot Zone' in a chapter on Ebola. He also mentions that a few scientists he interviewed considered certain aspects, such as bloody tears, 'to be bullshit'.

  • Do you think 'The Hot Zone' sensationalises typical Ebola infections?

  • How do you feel about the media coverage of Ebola epidemics?

  • What could be done to dissuade panic and hysteria among the general public?

Thanks for the reply - I was under the impression that the symptoms had been hyped up somewhat.

Can you expand on the 'out of control immune response'? From what I have read, there's all sorts of ideas to do with kidney failure, liver failure, DIC and inhibition of interferon production that could cause death - there doesn't seem to be much of a confident consensus.
