What was the atmosphere at NASA like during the moments before the moon landing? What was it like witnessing it and what were you thinking?

I can imagine it would have been. As someone who wasn't alive during this time it's always fascinated me. What were the days like after they had landed? Could people not stop talking about it? I can't imagine what it would be like to have witnessed man walking on the moon for the first time, people must have gone nuts with excitement?
