I can answer that as I just got off a bus that had to change drivers in Montana. This guy drove out to the town and slept in a motel until we got here. The reason we know this because he was bitching about traffic getting there... Which is also the reason we were late... Which is also the reason drivers had to be changed because the first driver hit his limit (my understanding is he'll take over the Holiday Inn room).

I've been to a few of those mentioned places. Highly recommend it, but you defnitely need a Chinese guide, a passing knowledge of Mandarin Chinese, or local translator as most of the travel agencies and tourist industries cater to Chinese tourists only. I went to an area in Yunnan where my father had to teach the hotel owner how to key in our passports (we're ethnically Chinese and can speak the language well, but not Chinese Nationals). Very cheap, very worth it. My 3-day trip to Inner Mongolia cost under USD200, which a 4 day trip around the province of Yunnan is under USD1500 for the whole family.
