Why is Stonehenge so ridiculously expensive?

I'd rather a more balanced pricing method so we could take friends and family from abroad to the more well known sites. Without the need to plan in advance and buy the travel passes, which we might not even take full advantage of.

Yes I am aware at how English Heritage works, I've been to plenty of sites. I was making a not so subtle dig about how Stonehenge is around £20-£25 per person when some much more interesting sites are substantially cheaper.

I should make it clear that I do appreciate the work English Heritage does but Stonehenge is the only place I've been to where I felt ripped off.
