Very long story made short...

Pro wrestling's lineage goes back to carnivals where a wrestler would take on anyone that would show up to fight him. Where boxers legitimately punch each others faces, wrestlers figured out early on that they could just pretend to and still make money. Fewer injuries means more matches which means more money. Thus, pro wrestling became a "work". That is, it became a staged theatrical event.

The winner is determined by a person known as a "booker". The booker's job is to come up with finishes and storylines that will make people want to come back and see more.

It's very soap opera. Very theater. It's one of those things you either get or don't get.

I hadn't heard that before. There are a few suspensions that all of a sudden seem a lot more substantial than they did before I read that.
