They’re useful because they’re the best way to scientifically deduce how a body changes as it decays.

Remember that the Soviets lost more than 25 million people (though of course this includes Ukrainian losses as well), and that is considered a victory in Russia. They will be able to take a lot more than their current losses of manpower before popular opinion shifts towards ending the war, as long as Ukrainians or Westerners are dying in exchange.
