Gacha is short for Gachapon. Gachapon refers to those vending machines where you put in a coin or two and turn a handle to deposit the coins and get a plastic capsule with a toy inside. Gacha is the onomatopoeia for the sound the crank makes when you turn it and Pon is the sound the plastic capsule makes when it hits the bottom of the chute.

Westerners might be familiar with these capsule vending machines from the exit of supermarkets or sitting on the shelf in some drug stores.

Gacha in games refers to this kind of mechanic where you put in money (or an equivalent) and get something somewhat random out. In physical gacha the appearance rate is determined by how much of each item was stocked. Digitally, it's a random number used as an index to a weighted table.

Gacha and loot boxes are probably gambling. This is why they're becoming more controversial. Additionally, gacha games are usually at least a little pay to win with people who can spend thousands (whales) being able to get any rare powerful gear or characters while free to play players do not have the same opportunity.

They actually did a behind the scenes series about the audition process towards the beginning of the pandemic. It's awesome.

Problem there is that while truth is an absolute defense to defamation, they still need to make that argument to a judge. Lawsuits are expensive even if you win. Not every state has Anti-SLAPP laws to help with this either.
