FYI: The State of Indiana hired a third-party committee to analyze the affect of prohibition of marijuana on the State, and they found it actually produces more of a burden on society, rather than helping it. I don't remember exactly what the numbers were, but they mentioned a tax revenue increase of like $120 million/year. Also to consider is the amount of money they would save on not having prisoners or people jailed, or police enforcement, or any of the legal issues and court costs. Also, the people involved, the dealers, the growers, the shippers, etc..., instead of being at the proverbial "bottom of the bucket" in civilization, they now become the top of a multi-billion dollar industry.
Personally, I believe that any natural substance that can reflect health benefits, and be used as such, should be legalized; controlled and taxed sure, but legalized.
I have never smoked anything before in my life, and don't ever plan on it, regardless of its particular legal standing. I feel this is important for people to know who may read this.
And to quote a fellow Reddit-or:
"Gee, if we only had an example of a prohibited substance creating an environment of mob violence and crime, where unregulated production of the substance blinded and killed many of it's users, and where legalization not only eliminated these problems, but created a huge revenue stream for the government.
I'm going to mix myself a drink and mull that one over."
Good luck. Wish I could help you win.
