Advances in technology are unpredictable. Some may have already happened, but in a different field, only to be "rediscovered" by another and utilized.

For example, the theory behind the MRI was discovered in the 1930s by physicists, rediscovered to have purpose by a doctor in the 1970s, but not used medically until the 1980s

It took 40 years for someone to stumble on an antiquated technology from another field and utilize it.
