The exact problem is that they're not breaking the law by and large. It's legalized patronage/corruption, and it's a huge problem. You can't just dismiss it because is not illegal. A better approach is to question the efficacy of the system in the first place in light of the resulting skewed allegiances of politicians to moneyed interests.

I do have specific policy expertise and am well exposed to the hill.

Those in and out of the beltway need to be able to smell their own stink. Lobbying is fairly akin to legalized patronage. I don't care if you're lobbying for UFT or Lockheed. I would add in moneyed voices in political fundraising as well. Moneyed interests have the biggest voices... That money = speech all but assures this fact.

You can dismiss that critique baselessly, but it helps the country little and belies reality.
