As a US citizen, one thing I hear about constantly is what people outside the US can do?

Considering how much of internet traffic flows through our country, it almost seems like those outside the US effectively have to pass through US customs just to use the internet.

Are you able to elaborate on encryption, both at the local/personal level (truecrypt, VPN, etc) or at the end-to-end SSL level (2048-bit key vs 1024-bit key)? What role (if any) does this play with regards to digital privacy?

Can you elaborate on a way to do an "explain to me like I'm five" for people that are not as well informed? Many people I know don't have the knowledge because they don't have time or aren't simply aware of it. Thanks!
