Things only bother you until you get used to them. If it's how you make a living, it probably stops being creepy after awhile.

addictions work because whatever you're addicted to makes you happy (or gives you some sort of positive reinforcement) for long enough for the addiction to become a habitual source of that reinforcement. Then, when it stops being so good, you don't really realize it because you've grown so used to connecting the action/drug/etc with positive reinforcement. That, and in your mind you think "maybe this time it'll feel good again" or something along those lines.

Sorta like how smokers will smoke when they're stressed out. The familiar action is what makes them feel better, not the actual cigarette itself. Doing the same actions with something else instead of the cig, as long as going through the motions felt exactly the same, would work as well in many cases.
