I'm currently working on my MS in wildlife biology and have had several acquaintances over the years who have gone to various African countries to do volunteer work with wildlife groups. It always made me wonder whether their presence actually helps in the long run. It seems to me that the easy availability of well-off Americans who are willing to work a few months for free would take job opportunities away from locals. Also, the high turnover rate that this type of volunteer tourism entails sounds like a nightmare. What are your thoughts on this issue?
