I believe there are students who cannot be affected by the best teaching in the world. Unfortunately I also believe they are mostly inner-city kids who think that learning casts a stigma on them among their peers. There are also lots of kids out there who have learning disabilities or the attention spans of gnats.

It's not fair to judge teachers based on their performance. Or perhaps, those kids need specialized teachers and exceptional teaching methods which are customized to their needs.

Perhaps we need to, as a country, just accept that not all kids are going to be college graduates, and have lines of learning that lead to good, solid work in trades, such as those that are typically honed at a vocational technology school. We need to stop looking down at that kind of thing, collectively, and realize that those people are important and necessary in our country, and are reasonably well-paid.

I know most people have already seen it here on reddit, but this is a great TED talk from Dirty Jobs' Mike Rowe.
