What is the current consensus on usage of NSAIDs for ankylosing spondylitis? Why is it recommended to take NSAIDs continually during active disease instead of on-demand if they do not slow down the progression of the disease?

If there are is no proven slowdown of progression why is continuous taking of NSAIDs recommended by the Spondylitis Association of America as the first line treatment? Do risks of continuous usage not outweigh the risks if there is no proven benefit? Thanks for answering by the way :) You are awesome.
