Is this game linked canonically to the 2012 X-com remake?

One of the things I did like from the original XCOM FPS you were working on were the geometrical lovecraftian aliens. I know that the game has gone under a major redesign (Possibly for the better), and that traditional xcom aliens are the norm, but will we see stranger alien types alongside the Sectoids and other staples of the xcom setting? Or maybe some fan favorites like Snakemen?
