I don't know why you are focused upon the NSA, it would appear by the released information, it is the FBI that captures the data, and is provided to NSA/CIA upon request.

I find this very disturbing. It is almost as disturbing as when international corporations lobby politicians and DOJ does not call it treason. The primary problem with privatized prison systems is that it creates profitability in criminalizing the population, exactly where is rehabilitation fit in with that? Just another kick in the teeth beyond deficit spending balanced budgets to fund a surveillance state by a country that is in unmistakable decline right? So, since we are all going down with the dollar why not increase to ludacris speed on the whole process huh?

Alas! The actual purpose for the NSA total information awareness program: Not enough people were opting in for advertising. Not to mention to further corporate war against small business and offending non elite corporations.
