To be fair to the doctors, they didn't necessarily say it to be cruel or anything.

Based on what she's described, OP probably has a painfully short life expectancy. In some cases, sufferers live full lives. However, less than five years from diagnosis to organ removal, etc, indicates that she's not in such a great position. She could very easily succumb in just a few years.

In context of that, it could be that the doctors were trying to spare her struggle and suffering that was never really going to "pay off", per se.

I mean, I'm definitely impressed by OP finishing school and getting a job as a social worker, especially if that's what she wants with her life. That's fantastic, and I'd certainly say she's free to do absolutely whatever she wants with her life. But I don't think we need to hate the doctors for what they said.
