If you join Cadw, which is the Welsh equivalent, then you get free access to Scottish and English Heritage sites after 1 year, not sure if it's the same the other way around.

Many of the stones were set into concrete in restoration projects in the 1920s and 1950s so they should be fairly stable.
That may be quite difficult.

I'm curious why you've decided to go for this now - is there a particular event that provided the push or is this something you've been mulling over for a long time and now seems like the right time to go for it?

English Heritage have 382 sites, 252 have free entry. The prices on the big attractions like Stonehenge mean that you can get in free to a whole other bunch of places.
