Thank you for sharing your heartache with us. I hope that your family recovers from this tragedy.

I have a 7 week old son who has bad reflux and I have to hold him for a long time after every feed. We often fall asleep like this, with his head on my chest and it was an easy way for me to grab some sleep.

But from now on I will stay awake until he is safely back in his bed. Your story may have just saved his life. Thank you.

Asphyxia overlay occurs when something prevents the infant from breathing. Usually something heavy on his or her chest pushes the air out and then he can't draw another breath because of that weight, and can't cry either. The weight can come from a pillow, or a blanket but is usually a co-sleeper.

I know this explanation is dry, I hope you don't feel offended. I deeply appreciate your AMA and am truly sorry for your loss.

I've had a few operations and the anesthesiologists were always part of the background, I never really spoke to them, barely knew they were there.

A few months ago I had a miscarriage and opted for the surgical clean up. I was in a terrible state in pre-op. Really teary and just an emotional wreck.

The OB was all business-let's-get-this-over-with and the anesthesiologist told him to take a walk then she spent 15 - 20 minutes chatting to me. We spoke about the op, the miscarriage, how to deal with the emotional recovery etc.

She single-handedly got me through that ordeal until my husband was with me again after the op.

Thank you for taking the compassion part seriously, it makes a huge difference.

Thank you for sharing with us, as a mother of two children I'm terrified that they might be molested and many of your answers have given me insight into how I could protect them (teach them to stand up for themselves and value the sanctity of their bodies. Thank you for that.
