How does one get involved in war journalism exactly? were you an 'average' journalist until you decided to take a more adventerous/dangerous route or has it been something that you've always wanted to do?

thanks for an excellent answer! war journalism has always been something of a "what would you do if money wasn't an issue" for me since I view telling these stories as absolutely essential for humanizing and contextualizing the human cost of conflict that's often lost when you're detached from the fighting.
