Possible to elaborate purely out of interest?

Can't recomment this thread enough: http://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/t5shp/ex_thief_chopshop_operator_ama/

In summary, keep the steering locked, disc lock the rear wheel (harder to drop and change the rear than the front), chain the bike through the frame and anchor it to the ground/something fixed. Keep the bike covered and out of sight as much as possible (in a garage or secure lockup being the best option here).

Extra tips:

  • if you can, elevate the chain instead of leaving it on the floor (i.e. chain the bike to an anchor a metre or so up a wall) it is much harder to get leverage on a bolt cutter at height.

  • for extra security strip a bolt head out on the front wheel. A thief would not be prepared for this and would slow down/prohibit a wheel change. A shop will be able to get it out in future if needed.

  • if you use a GPS tracking system hide it in the airbox and insist the shop wire it into the loom.

  • theft insurance is your friend.
