I hear you on that, but not everyone has the money or inclination to drop hundreds or thousands at REI just to go outside. John Muir covered thousands of trailless miles in the Sierras with just an overcoat and a pocketful of biscuits. The REI hyper-geared - hyper-SPECIFIC-geared - thing, eg different hiking poles for flats versus hills, different socks for granite hiking versus shale - feels equally silly. Feels frantic and not-fun. Many people who look ill-prepared aren't. And vice versa. It's just going outside. It doesn't have to be an expedition up Denali.

Why are people so spazzy about wolves? Water rights I get, but what's the anger source with wolves? A few calves can't be it. Fear? Jealousy? What?
