I have an incoming 9th grader and an incoming 6th grader. What should I/we be doing now in order for them to have a higher chance in getting in to the college/university that they want to go to?

Generally speaking, what are the factors for admissions? I'm know not all schools have 100% the process, but what should students and parents alike be aware of?

The oldest is passionate about Math and music (shes always wanted to be a dr, up until recently). The youngest is passionate about art and animals (she wants to be a vet).

I know some extracurriculars "look better" on college apps, but with their interests wouldn't some of those look off as they aren't geared towards their future goals?

My oldest has our state's school music association solo and ensemble performance coming up. She plays the Viola. This year, they haven't been able to take their instruments back and forth, from home to school. They had to stay at school. So unless I buy another, she only gets to practice for an hour a day.

So for my question, given the lack of practice time, what piece would be a good choice for a solo, that would still be at least slightly challenging for someone who's been playing for 4 1/2 years?
