Because he would be justified in using the weapon to defend his life. He was not knocked out from the first blow. It would stop being a "game" to these people when their victim can defend himself and they could potentially lose their life.

Obviously concealed carry is not always going to save you. But it gives you an option. Having the weapon is potentially an equalizer in a situation where a group is trying to kill you. It has a lot to do with mindset as well. When you put on that sword I assume it was part of a costume. It was not something that you put on with the mindset that in a life or death situation you were going to use it.
