The problem is endemic. You view yourselves as women first, directors second. Directors view you as women first, directors second.

Perhaps concentrate more on career, and less on gender equality. If your perception of self is woman first and then occupation, it's no wonder the rest of the world views you in similar fashion.

How about we do with gender what we've been attempting with race? That is to ignore it completely. If you're a good director you'll have work. If you're a shit director you won't.

I'm just sayin'.

...ensure safety and security so that we aren’t a burden on others or dead. /u/Whats-gluten

Lofty goals, both, but also as unattainable as standing in the center of a star and remaining alive. All three of the above goals are theoretically possible.

Our society has definitely been conditioned, over time.

Safety. Security. These words are comforting. They are also illusions. Control is an illusion, and both safety and security rely heavily upon the illusion of control. Neither safety nor security are ultimately obtainable. Only a modicum of each is graspable and only for short periods of time.

Our ancestors knew this; they lived it.

As for being a burden on others, we begin life this way, we end life this way. Humans are not solitary creatures. We rely upon others for our survival, and well-being. We will always and forever be a burden upon someone. We will all perish. Burdens and death are the yin to the yang of life.

The best humans can hope for is temporary relief from trouble, hazards, threats, and illness. Enjoy the reprieve while possible.

Just like rip-tides, don't swim against the current. Accept. Embrace. Swim across the current, and the shore is reachable.

Ending note: If your swim lands you upon shores of Australia, you may want to re-think your landing zone. (Australia is the ultimate proof that both safety and security are illusions.)
