What is something that the average person could do to make life easier for Little People?

I read a devastating (and true) novel about an infant boy whose penis was destroyed during circumscion due to a faulty medical machine. They decided the best thing to do was remove the tiissue that remained and raise him as a girl. Of course hormonally he was still a boy.

IIRC he was never told what happened and grew up confused and miserable. It is really amazing that he didn't commit suicide.

The title is As Nature Made Him: The Boy Who Was Raised as a Girl. It really made me change my view of circumcision from a no-risk cultural habit to a major medical procedure.

Edit: thank you to /u/mungboot who pointed out I recalled incorrectly one of the facts from a book I read 4 years ago. And also thanks to everyone who updated events after the book ended. I am leaving my original comment for (insert good reason here).

What can people in dorms/barracks/apartments do? Not everyone has a yard and I imagine raising bees would irritate neighbors.

The info on how you want us to respond when a child yells something inappropriate is very useful. I was in a wheelchair for a while when I was also active duty military. People automatically assumed I was injured in Iraq, most little kids assumed I was a man (even though I look female and have long hair.)

I also appreciated people who let their kids approach me so I could explain in a friendly way.

Have you seen the episode of "An Idiot Abroad" where Carl visits the LP village in China, and then calls Peter D. on the phone to talk about it? It is sad and hilarious at the same time.

Are there any bee friendly plants I could put on the balcony in summertime?
