I am from Colombia and I now live in the US. In my opinion the average Colombian is much more friendly and helpful than the average American. I also think in American you can blur the line between criminal and innocent where you have people who do criminal activities but also lead normal lives. In Colombia criminals are criminals, nothing more. They're ruthless and don't give a fuck about you, I think that's what OP's referring to.

I remember the first time I was in the US and a friend wanted to go to his "dealer" to get some marijuana. I told them I really didn't want to have to talk to dealers and criminals anymore and they all wondered why I was so paranoid. Turned out a "dealer" was just Joe around the corner with his Wife and kids.
