how do you slaughter crickets?

they aren't vegetarian then, are they if they eat crickets...

I doubt any animal in the zoo (or ranch) is content - not an ideal way to spend your day being gawked at or ultimately sliced up and eaten.

I feel so sorry for the ostriches at the zoo you mention in particular, they must be stressed and sad and unstimulated because they are seen as property of business, not a sentient being.

I bet if you visited one in a sanctuary it would be better, I saw some in Australian sanctuary and they were peaceful yet playful, looked healthy and were charming to observe from a distance.
